The classic BBC Comedy series starring Ronnie Barker and Ronnie Corbett. Ronnie Barker and Ronnie Corbett were an unlikely comedy team but their talents complemented each other perfectly in a series which would run for 16 years and become part of British television history. From their introduction, "And in a packed programme tonight..." to the "Goodnight from him", viewers would savour the familiar features - the opening and closing news items, the party sketches, Sid and George, the yokels, Ronnie Barker's word-play speeches, the rambling monologues from Ronnie Corbett, the spoof adventure serials and magnificent musical extravaganza finale. First series chock-full with razor-sharp wordplay, sight gags and double entendres galore. With regular sketches like their 'Newsdesk' (sample headline: 'the perfect crime committed: thieves broke into Scotland Yard and stole all the toilets. Police say they have absolutely nothing to go on') 'The Phantom Raspberry Blower of Old London Town' and their spoof period drama 'Hampton Wick'. Other weekly features included their wordplay introduction (sample: 'this evening we had hoped to have been bringing you Arthur the Human Chameleon, but this afternoon, he crawled across a tartan rug and died of exhaustion' and the pint-sized Corbett's hilariously rambling monologue delivered from a huge leather chair and a musical guest that always seemed to be Barbara Dickson though this initial series features pop singer of the time, Tina Charles. The second series features Georgie Fame and Alan Price as regular guests. Among the many highlights of the eight episodes were the Driving Test and the Rumours Nightschool sketches, a great send up of ‘Come Dancing’, the first appearance of Charley Farley and Piggy Malone in the serial ‘Done to Death’ (“Is Malone next for the chop, or will he end up with the steak and kidney pie?”) and their famous cockney opera, ‘Tooting Carmen’. |
