Else has died and Alf is left to cope with life as a widower. Now he has to get by on a smaller pension, cook his own Sunday dinner and put up with Mrs. Hollingbery, his landlady who lives in the upstairs flat.

Alf's not exactly alone, he's still got his drinking friend Arthur; exasperated neighbours, the Johnsons; Winston, the black (and gay!) social worker; his daughter, Rita; batty ex-neighbour Min and her senile sister Gwenneth and Mrs. Hollingbery, who might even cook for him - if he can prove himself "handy around the house"!
