THE END OF STEAM - DR BEECHING's RAILWAY CUTS IN THE 60s
In the 1950's Britains railway network was huge. In the 1960s, that network was radically changed as British Railways carried out its modernisation programme. Country stations and branch lines were axed in the name of progress and steam locomotives were consigned to the scrap heap.
Behind the transformation Dr. Richard Beeching was planning the modernisation and for better or worse, this DVD tells the story of how and why our railways were changed forever.
The British Transport Films unit and the TV news captured this changing scene, but much of the footage was never released.
Composed from unseen colour film footage, witness the Lost Age of British Railways
Using unseen archive film, this documentary captures The End Of Steam - Narrated by Nick Coady.
