Set in 1957 in Connecticut this film perfectly captures the idealised way of life from 50 years ago. Julianne Moore plays Cathy Whitaker, the perfect wife and mother of the perfect family living in a perfect house with the perfect maid and gardener in the perfect neighbourhood. The one problem? Nothing is perfect! She discovers her husband is tortured by homosexual feelings and although she totally supports him when he decides to get psychiatric help she finds she is getting closer to her sensitive black gardener played by Dennis Haysbert. With Dennis Quaid playing her husband this film has a wonderful cast. No wonder then that Far From Heaven was nominated for 4 Oscars. Beautifully shot, showing us the emotions and turmoil of a time when sexual and racial prejudice was deeply held, this film must be seen.
